MPRL E&P Spuds Onshore Deep Wildcat MANN DEEP EAST-1
- July 27, 2011
MPRL E&P Pte Ltd. ( “MPRL E&P” ), the only independent exploration & production company, active in both onshore and offshore Myanmar, has announced on 26 July 2011 the start of its deep exploratory drilling operations on Mann Deep East-1. Chief Minister of the Magwe Region HE U Phone Maw Shwe together with Chief Executive Officer U Moe Myint spudded the well during the spud-in ceremony held on 21 July 2011.
MPRL E&P is drilling Mann Deep East-1 to 14,600 ft planned total depth along hole ( 12,900 ft true vertical depth ) with two objectives:
¤ |
the uppermost secondary objective towards 7,000 ft along hole consists of the same Oligo-Miocene Reservoirs as producing oil in the Mann Field to be drilled in an adjacent compartment to the East; |
| | |
¤ |
the deep primary objective between 11,000 and 14,000 ft consists of the Lower Oligocene Shwezetaw Sandstones below the MannField, on each side of a major bounding fault to the East of the Mann Field. The reservoirs are expected to be highly over-pressured. These sandstones are producing oil in several shallower fields to the north of Mann and light oil is expected in Mann Deep. |
MDE-1 is regarded as a most challenging well to drill as none of the dozen or so wells previously attempted by MOGE, to tag the deep exploration potential of Mann so far, has reached the prospective Shwezetaw Sandstones. Failure to reach this deep objective is due to extreme overpressures, up to a density exceeding 2.5 kg/liter. These overpressures can actually be seen bursting to surface at mud volcanoes spewing gas and light oil, south of the town of Minbu. Such severe overpressures are located in the core of the very steep and recent Mann Fold, whose shallower layers host the Mann Oil Field. In order to avoid this over-pressured core, Mann Deep East-1 will reach its deep targets from the side, along a deviated course up to 35° from the vertical. Mann Deep East-1 will be one of the deepest wells ever drilled in onshore Myanmar. Drilling operations are to last for about 2-3 months to reach the target depth. Mann Deep East-1 will also be the first well onshore Myanmar to be drilled with oil-based drilling mud, to speed up penetration and thus save substantial money and energy. The oil used for the drilling mud is of low toxicity, in compliance with stringent environmental standards, and the drilling mud will be recycled for other drilling operations.
Mann Deep East-1 is being drilled using the brand new 1,800-hp Rig AD-2 belonging to an affiliated company Asia Drilling Pte Ltd. ( “Asia Drilling” ). The rig was successfully mobilized to the location of the drilling operations without any incident in spite of difficult weather conditions and challenging access logistics. AD-2 is of the latest generation of AC-VFD rigs, with a depth rating of 20,000 ft, and includes the latest drilling facilities such as draw-works, iron roughneck and top drive system from the best manufacturers in the USA. This state-of-the-art rig will ensure that the deep targets of this challenging well will be reached in a minimum of time with a maximum chance for technical and commercial success.
Asia Drilling’s Rig AD-1 has recently completed a drilling campaign for Carnarvon Petroleum in Thailand with praise for its impeccable technical and HSE performances.

Background :
MPRL E&P along with state owned national oil company MOGE operates the Mann Field, in onshore Central Myanmar, under a Performance Compensation Contract ( more under the website of MPRL E&P at www.mprlexp.com ).
To date, the company has invested over US$ 120 million in the Mann Field Project. The budget allocation for this year alone is US$ 23.8 million.
MPRL E&P will regularly update the status of the drilling operations of Mann Deep East-1 as results are achieved.
